As HR 550 Lobby Days wrap up, a final report from the field. Andrew Silver and Lee Baker, activists from North Carolina, enjoyed a generally receptive response from their home-state contingent. Senator Richard Burr and Representatives Brad Miller and Walter Jones all showed enthusiasm for the objective and the legislation. Representative Howard Coble's staff, however, indicated a reluctance to support the bill based on state's rights grounds. The ultimate response from North Carolina's Congressional delegation will be interesting to follow given the fact that a North Carolina county experienced one of the more severe e-voting failures during the November 2004 election, forcing election officials to rerun a local race. Learning the lessons from state-level e-voting mistakes and helping voters across the country from repeating them would benefit all of us.
