Katitza Rodriguez, EFF’s International Rights Director, will be a featured panelist at the World Summit on the Information Society Forum 2012  in Geneva, Switzerland from May 14 to 18. At the event, stakeholders from throughout the world will discuss strategies for promoting human rights on the Internet.

The WSIS Forum 2012 is jointly organized by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD)  and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP).

Freedom of expression is a core value of the Geneva Plan of Action, a long-term vision to emerge from the United Nations’ World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) held in Tunis in 2005. The discussion at WSIS Forum 2012 will revolve around the human rights implications of information and communication technologies, and inform the WSIS review process leading up to 2015. UNESCO has invited stakeholders at this forum “to debate on how to equally apply the principle of freedom of expression to Internet and social media.” Other panelists will include Frank La Rue, UN Special Rapporteur on Freedom of Expression, and Elvana Thaçi of the Council of Europe.

Katitza is also attending The next Open Consultations of the Internet Governance Forum from May 15 at  the ILO Headquarters building in Geneva, Switzerland, as part of the WSIS Forum 2012.

Real-time transcription and remote participation will be provided for the May Open Consultations meeting.
