EFF-Austin, a local organization in the Electronic Frontier Alliance, (not EFF) will host this event:
Passkeys 101
From the Organizers:
Last year, Nate spoke about passwords. Later that same year, passkeys were released to the public - most notably via Android and iOS mobile devices - and were heralded as the next step in account security: easier than passwords, but more secure. Or so the narrative went. In this talk, Nate will resume the theme of account security and authentication with an entry-level overview of this new technology: what are passkeys? How do they work? What are the advantages and disadvantages? When do passkeys make sense to use? How do you get started? All this and more will be discussed.
Our speaker this month is Nate Bartram. Nate Bartram is the founder and editor of The New Oil, a website (including a weekly blog, podcast, and videos) that aims to make data privacy and cybersecurity easy for those without a technical background. Whether you’re looking to keep yourself safe from identity theft and common hacks, whether you simply object to mass surveillance, or anything in between, his site will help you learn the basics about protecting your identity, your safety, and your data in a way that’s accessible and achievable.
Talk will be livestreamed at https://www.youtube.com/user/austintechlive and will later be archived at https://www.youtube.com/user/effaustin. Questions for the speaker from virtual attendees may be submitted via the Youtube livestream chat, our Twitter account, @EFFaustin, or our Mastodon account, @effaustin.
